The Deutsche Oper Berlin has announced that Spanish bass-baritone Carlos Álvarez will not be appearing in the role of Count René Anckarström in the December 2021 performances of Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera.”

American baritone Thomas Lehman will take over the performances scheduled for Dec. 20, 22, and 29, 2021. Lehman joins a cast that includes Yusif Eyvazov as Gustavo III, Angela Meade as Amelia, Judit Kutasi in the role of Ulrika, and Meechot Marrero as Oscar. The cast is rounded out by Samueol Park, Patrick Guetti, Tyler Zimmerman, Jörg Schörner, and Andrew Dickinson. Michelangelo Mazza conducts a production by Götz Friedrich.

As a member of the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper, Lehman has sung the role of Gunther in Wagner’s “Götterdämmerung,” Ford in Verdi’s “Falstaff,” Count Almaviva in Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro,” Belcore in Donizetti’s “L’elisir d’amore,” Guglielmo in Mozart’s “Così fan tutte,” and the title role in Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia,” among many others.

Álvarez is slated to return to the stage in the title role in Verdi’s “Rigoletto” at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège in March 2022.

The run of “Un Ballo in Maschera” at Deutsche Oper Berlin begins on Dec. 20, 2021, and is set to end on April 17, 2022.
