Tampa Fire Rescue: 100 gallons of jet fuel spilled on Selmon Connector ramp to I-4

Fire officials say the spill happened after a driver of a fuel truck forgot to close the top of his tank.

TAMPA, Fla. — A hazardous material spill on the Selmon Connector caused a major traffic delay Friday morning in Tampa.

Tampa Fire Rescue says the spill happened after the driver of a fuel truck forgot to close the top of his tank. Once the driver realized he had fuel splashing around, he pulled over and called police.

According to firefighters, around 100 gallons of jet fuel had spilled onto the road, causing the entrance ramp from the Selmon Expressway to the Selmon Connector to Interstate 4 to be shut down while crews worked to mitigate the spill.

Emergency crews were prepared with water and foam in case a fire broke out, but fire rescue says they were eventually able to soak up the fuel.

No one was injured in the incident, and police say the roadway was eventually reopened.
