Former US track and field star Emmit King was shot dead along with another man, William Wells, after an argument ended in gunfire in Bessemer, Alabama last weekend.

King was pronounced dead at hospital following the shootout between the two men.

The retired sprinter had a prestigious track career in the 1980s. He went to the 1980 and 1984 Games Olympics as a spare for the US 100m relay team, but did not compete in either.

The former athlete’s biggest achievement was winning 100m bronze in the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki, a race in which Carl Lewis won gold. During those Championships, he also won gold in the 4x100m, running in the same team as Lewis, Calvin Smith and Willie Gault. King was also NCAA 100m National Champion in 1983, and recorded a 100m PB of 10.04 in the 1988 US Olympic Trials.

The other man involved in the shooting, Wells, died at the scene. Witnesses say the pair knew each other and were arguing before both pulled out guns and fired.
