Chicago PD is on the cusp of some major events. The last episode teased a tense showdown between Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Voight (Jason Beghe) over who will take the blame for Roy’s death in season 8.

The anticipation for what happens next has been doubled by the fact that Chicago PD has been on hiatus for the holiday season. NBC has shown reruns or outright shifting the show’s time slot to accommodate for TV specials and holiday episodes of Saturday Night Live.

With things reaching a fever pitch, fans want to know when Chicago PD is airing its finale episode of 2021 and when its set to resume its normal schedule for 2022. Here’s the complete rundown.

Season finale of Chicago PD 2021

Chicago PD will air its mid-season finale on Wednesday, December 8. The episode is titled “A Way Out” and the NBC synopsis reads:

"With the FBI closing in on the Roy Walton investigation, Voight and Halstead strategize a way out; after a city bus driver is shot by a passenger, the team investigates a possible abduction."

The episode will serve as both the finale of season 9’s first half and the final new episode of the show to air during the 2021 calendar year. NBC will revert to reruns/holiday programming for the rest of December. Chicago PD, like Chicago Med and Fire, will recover its time slots in January.

The biggest question heading into the mid-season finale is whether any major cast members will exit the show. There’s been lots of hints that either Halstead or Voight could be sent to prison, or event Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), given that she’s the one who actually pulled the trigger and killed Roy.

Thankfully, it looks like major personnel shakeups will be avoided. The synopsis seems to hint at the fact that Halstead and Voight join forces to find a way out of their tricky situation with the FBI versus selling each other out.

This dynamic will be a nice reversal of what we’ve seen for most of season 9. Halstead and Voight have been at each other’s throats for several episodes now, with the former chastising Voight for his seemingly erratic and reckless decisions when it comes to the running of the IU department.

We can’t wait to see what the Chicago PD showrunners have in store for the characters and the audiences as we wrap up the 2021 TV season.
