Peaky Blinders is coming back for its sixth and final series in early 2022, and a new clip from BBC One has teased the return of Tom Hardy's Alfie Solomons.

In the dimly-lit teaser, which you can see below, Cillian Murphy's Tommy Shelby approaches and Alfie and says: "I think I may have written your final act." How ominous!

Alfie was seemingly killed at the end of the fourth series, having been shot in the face. But the fifth series hinted that he'd actually survived, delivering on those hints right at the end when he was revealed to be alive... although he was looking rather worse for wear, unable to see out of his left eye.

Characters apparently meeting their maker but then being revealed to be alive is a trick the show has played a few times before.

Creator Steven Knight has revealed that he actually struggles to make his characters meet their end, previously telling Digital Spy that he doesn't "like to kill anyone off".

He said: "Usually, deaths are forced by an actor not being available, to be honest. I don't believe in, 'You've got to kill a family member to keep everybody interested'. That's not true. Death is quite rare, even amongst gangsters. So I try not to make it too common."

Editing on the final episode was recently completed, although there's still some work to do behind the scenes. Knight is soon set to start writing the Peaky Blinders movie, which he believes will be the end.

Peaky Blinders season 6 is currently filming and will air on BBC One. Obsessed With… Peaky Blinders hosted by Digital Spy's Editor, Laurence Mozafari – is available to listen to on BBC Sounds.

Headshot of Joe Anderton
Joe Anderton

Joe Anderton is a freelance news writer and resident Welsh person at Digital Spy, having worked there since 2016.

In his time he's covered a host of live events, interviewed celebrities big and small and crowbarred a countless amount of great/awful (delete as appropriate) puns into articles.

A big fan of TV and movies both mainstream and obscure, Joe's main interest is in video gaming. Although particularly a PlayStation gamer, he plays across Xbox, Nintendo and PC/Steam Deck, and likes to keep tabs on many games he's not got the time to play.

Joe currently does not use Twitter, but he only ever used it to tell people to watch the film Help! I'm a Fish (which you really should do).
