What are the best SUVs for snow and ice this winter? Subaru scored two models on the new rankings, but where is the Forester?

Does Subaru make the best all-wheel-drive vehicles for winter commutes? A new report from AutoGuide says the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek and the 2022 Subaru Outback are among the ten great choices for the best new SUVs for snow.

The 2022 Crosstrek and 2022 Outback come standard with Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system for all-weather capability, and both have 8.7-inches of ground clearance. But they don’t stop there.

The new Outback and Crosstrek come with the brand’s X-Mode all-terrain system, giving another all-weather capability level. The Outback XT and Crosstrek Sport offer more extreme weather capabilities with their dual-function X-Mode with deep snow and deep mud settings.

AutoGuide says, “For outright snow conquering in a small SUV package, take a look at the Subaru Crosstrek.” About the Outback, AutoGuide says, “Can’t decide between a traditional wagon and an SUV for your next winter warrior? Why not have both? The Subaru Outback is essentially a Legacy Wagon raised to offer the ground clearance and capability of an SUV.”

The ten best SUV s ranked by size are the Mazda CX-30, Subaru Crosstrek, Ford Bronco Sport, Toyota RAV4 Prime, Subaru Outback, Kia Sorento PHEV, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Honda Pilot, Genesis GV80, and Chevrolet Suburban.

Where is the Subaru Forester?

The 2022 Subaru Forester is not one of AutoGuide's ten best, but Forester makes another recent iSeeCars Best SUVs for Snow list and is arguably as good as the Crosstrek and Outback for winter commutes. Forester also boasts standard all-wheel-drive, 8.7-inches of ground clearance, X-Mode, and dual-function X-Mode.

The Forester, Outback, and soon-coming Crosstrek offer the new Wilderness sub-brand trim levels for additional off-pavement capability. The models provide customers who live off the beaten path with an extra level of all-weather performance.

For city commuters, the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek and 2022 Subaru Outback are among the best all-wheel-drive vehicles for snow and ice, according to AutoGuide. We would include the refreshed 2022 Subaru Forester.
