One car breaks apart in serious two-vehicle collision in Berkeley County Wednesday night

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. — Police are investigating what caused a head-on vehicle collision Wednesday night on Hammonds Mill Road that left one car in two pieces.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Department responded to the crash in the 1000 block of Hammonds Mill Road north of Hedgesville about 6:14 p.m.

A preliminary investigation showed an eastbound 2003 Volkswagen Jetta crossed the center line and struck an eastbound Mazda CX5, according to a news release from the department.

The engine of the Volkswagen was separated from the rest of the vehicle in the crash, according to the release.

The driver of the Volkswagen, Nicholas Brumback, 20, of Martinsburg, suffered life-threatening injuries, the release said. He was listed as being in critical, but stable condition several hours after the crash.

Two male passengers in the car, a 20-year-old and a 17-year-old, both of Martinsburg, had serious injuries but were stable after the crash.

The driver of the Mazda, Kathryn Clayton, 38, of Hedgesville, had serious injuries but was later released from care, police said.

Hammonds Mill Road was close for about four hours while police investigated the collision.
