Three months after Hurricane Ida passed through Montgomery County, Bridgeport is still trying to recover from the devastation that the storm left in its wake, writes Robby Brod for WHYY.

Out of the 500 people who were displaced from their homes, around 90 people are still living in hotel rooms.

Some, like Elliott Palmer, did not have rental or flood insurance and were hit hard.

“I lost completely everything,” said Palmer.

However, he added that his situation would be much worse without fundraising and other help that was provided by fellow Bridgeport residents.

One of the first groups to organize support was First Presbyterian Church. On the morning of the flood, they immediately began collecting and distributing the necessary supplies.

Today, First Presbyterian is hoping to work with Upper Merion Area School District to find the best way to utilize the remaining relief funds to help still-displaced families.

Meanwhile, Montgomery County officials have said they do not plan to remove anybody from temporary housing before they have a permanent housing plan in place.

The county is “working with four local case-management agencies to provide extensive, in-person assistance with housing location in order to exit the hotels to permanent housing.”
