KYW Medical Report: Caffeine can reduce chances of stroke, dementia, study says

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A new study suggests drinking moderate amounts of tea and coffee may have a positive impact on your health.

According to an article in the journal The Lancet, drinking a few cups of coffee or tea each day can help reduce the chances of dementia or stroke by as much as 10%.

These types of studies revolving around popular dietary choices always seem to gain a great deal of attention, but this one is actually quite interesting — why dementia and stroke? What do they have in common?

One theory is that it comes down to damage in the cardiovascular system. Conditions like multi-infarct dementia, where parts of the brain literally die off, can lead to dementia, and we know that stroke is linked to cardiac issues.

So, enjoy that coffee and tea — in moderate amounts, of course.
