GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Green Bay’s Leo Frigo Bridge was closed for more than two hours Thursday night after someone reported what police called a “suspicious bump.”
The bridge was shut down around 4:30 p.m. following the report of the bump at the crest of the southbound lanes of Interstate 43. It reopened shortly after 7 p.m. following an inspection of the pavement by two state Department of Transportation engineers.
“A cursory review, we didn’t really notice anything out of the ordinary, but from an abundance of caution standpoint, we want to have another bridge engineer go out there and make sure that the pavement is all good for travelers,” DOT Regional Communications Manager Mark Kantola told FOX 11.
The report comes more than eight years after a pier sank deeper into the ground, causing a large sag in the bridge.
“Actually, this isn’t uncommon since the 2013 incident,” Kantola said. “We’ve had other incidents where citizens or people have called in and perceived to have felt a bump or a groover or a depression, what not, on the Leo Frigo Bridge. Any type of complaint that comes in regarding the bridge or the travel lanes, we take seriously.”
That 2013 incident shut the bridge down for 102 days.
A study found soil surrounding the affected pier contained industrial byproducts over wetlands, which caused corrosion.
