Why defending champions Sydney Sixers can prove unstoppable for third-straight BBL season

When you think about the history of the Big Bash League, two sides are clearly the benchmark - Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers.

Perth were able to win three of the first six seasons, while the Sixers' dominance has started to come a little bit later on, winning the last two BBL competitions consecutively.

Their squad isn't built around one or two big-name players - all eleven that take the field are just as important to the Sixers' success, as are those who are carrying drinks or only required for the odd game.

Having a deep squad in Big Bash is crucial, and when you take a look across the competition, Sixers are clearly the most well-rounded squad heading into BBL|11.

But the depth and quality of their squad isn't just dumb luck - it's built off the back of countless hours of work from the franchise's hierarchy.

Speaking on SEN's Breakfast With Vossy ahead of their first game on Sunday, Sixers coach Greg Shipperd spoke about how much emphasis he and his fellow list managers place on quality squad depth.

“I’ve spent a lot of time with my other list managers, working through all the combinations that you need across the course of a tournament," he said.

"In this particular point in time, we have Jackson Bird, Ben Dwarshius and Sean Abbott all unavailable to us with the ball, but we still feel we will deliver a really strong bowling performance against Stars on Sunday night.

"Having coverage through the batting lineup and the bowling, we think we’ve got a fantastic group of players who ultimately are unchanged from last year.

"We thought that group of players absolutely deserved the right to go from back-to-back, and to now potentially go back-to-back-to-back.

"It’s a rare opportunity, and we have entrusted this group to have their best shot at it."

No team has ever won three BBL titles in a row, but the Sixers will come into the 2021/22 season as red-hot favourites to make history.

The depth of their squad will be highlighted in the opening rounds by Hayden Kerr, who has been a standout in grade cricket for many years for Sydney Uni, and will get a good opportunity to cement a place in the Sixers' lineup.

“One that is in brilliant form at the moment is Hayden Kerr, who will be getting an opportunity early in the season," Shipperd said.

"With both bat and ball he is really starting to emerge, and we would liken him to Dan Sams from the Thunder.

"We hope he has the same impact over time for us."

It's high praise to be compared to Daniel Sams, who has emerged as one of the competition's best players given his ability with both bat and ball.

Another key piece of the Sixers' squad is Jordan Silk, who was a standout during BBL|10 and his coach is tipping him to back it up again this season.

"Someone who last season for us played a very important role in one of the newest phases of the game in the surge through the middle of the game was Jordan Silk, who is in sparkling form for Tasmania," Shipperd said.

"He was brilliant last year for us in that phase of the game, and looks to be in super form.

"He is the best fielder in the competition and played his role last year, and was close to if not the best player in the competition.

"I’m really looking forward to Jordan consolidating that side of his cricket."

But perhaps the most important members of the Sixers' squad are their leaders - Moises Henriques and Daniel Hughes.

The pair shared the captaincy at different stages last season, and Shipperd explained the importance of having good tactical leaders in the ever-changing landscape of T20 cricket.

“A big part of the game is the strategy, and a big part of that is linked to the conditions and the matchups and the opposition," he said.

"That is a dynamic and moving piece that changes by the ball, so players need to accept how the game is shaping and moving. Teams are very attuned to fighting back, and the captains are attuned to making calls that will improve the matchups that are coming.

"We are very fortunate at the Sixers to have one of the very best intellectual captains in the game in Moises Henriques, and last year into the fold stepped Daniel Hughes, who did a brilliant job for us in Moises’ absence.

"The captain plays an enormous role thinking on his feet out there, but there is a lot of pre-game homework done."

Sixers will begin their Big Bash campaign in the tournament opener on Sunday night against the Melbourne Stars.
