The Iowa High School Athletic Association is now investigating the assault at Tuesday night’s Carlisle-Nevada basketball game and stressing the importance of good sportsmanship. Police arrested Carlisle student player Carter Prenosil and charged him with willful injury.Video shows the game between Carlisle and Nevada started like any other routine basketball game. But that all changed in the handshake line after Carlisle lost. Police say Prenosil, 17, threw an unwarranted punch at Nevada player Ty Dittmer. The first fist went to the abdomen, then to the face. The assault knocked Dittmer out. He was hospitalized with stitches. Prenosil is charged with willful injury. It was a shock for high school students who watched the video explode online.“It definitely escalated really quickly. It was a little cheap, to punch him in line,” said Carlisle High School student Logan Schlichte.And on the same night, another social media post shows another incident at the Diagonal- East Union game. The players are seen going through the handshake line and walking away on the court. That's when the shoving begins between students and one person was knocked to the ground. The East Union principal apologized for one of his student’s actions. “To see somebody lose their composure in that situation was disappointing,” said Tom Keating, the executive director of the Iowa High School Athletic AssociationKeating did like not what he saw during those games. He says his group spends time promoting good sportsmanship and that it’s the responsibility of teachers, parents and coaches to demand good sportsmanship and for students to practice it.“We emphasize the need for sportsmanship and I think sometimes that word gets poo-pooed a little bit and we need to drill down on that means. it means you have respect for the people you’re playing against,” Keating said.It does not appear anyone was injured in the Diagonal East union incident. Prenosil, the Carlisle student, faces a felony willful injury charge.
