A 17-year-old high school basketball player from Iowa was arrested and charged with willful injury after repeatedly punching an opposing player during post-game handshakes. Carlisle's Carter Prenosil threw the punches at Nevada's Ty Dittmer, who appeared to go unconscious and reportedly required stitches, on Tuesday.
Both schools' superintendents have condemned Prenosil's conduct, with Carlisle superintendent Bryce Amos adding it is "not tolerated."
"This is without question an unfortunate incident that is not representative of the school culture that exists in Carlisle Community School District," Amos told KCCI 8 News.
The incident seemed to occur out of nowhere, allowing Prenosil to land a punch to the stomach and two punches to the head of an unexpecting Dittmer before other players pulled him away.
Students said the two traded insults during the game, possibly causing the fight afterward.
"It was a very unfortunate and disturbing situation," Nevada superintendent Steve Gray said. "Fortunately, it sounds like our student-athlete is going to be alright. I'm very appreciative of the response of our coaches and players, as well as the Carlisle administration, for quickly deescalating the situation."
Carlisle police alleged Prenosil threw an "unwarranted punch" to Dittmer's abdomen and face before arresting him, and the Carlisle School District is still investigating the situation.
