Saddle Mountain hike focuses on fire resiliency

SEC leads jaunt through Mayacamas range|

The Sonoma Ecology Center is branching out – all the way to the 960-acre Saddle Mountain preserve, where the nonprofit will host a guided hike from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4.

The hike will be led by District Steward Monica Demartini and SEC education program manager, Tony Passantino. Demartini is the resident fire ecologist and will discuss land management in a post-fire setting including, wildfire ecology and forest resiliency. She will also discuss the benefits of fire on California landscapes, after the 2020 Glass Fire touched this landscape, located above Rincon Valley, on the eastern boundary of Santa Rosa in the Mayacamas Mountain Range.

This is a moderately strenuous hike of approximately 3 to 4 miles with substantial elevation gain, on established trails and fire roads. Bring water and lunch, and be prepared for that day's weather. There is a shallow water crossing. The hike will go on in light rain, but heavy rain will cancel the outing. There is no charge for the event. Meet at Saddle Mountain Open Space Preserve, 6975 Montecito Boulevard, Santa Rosa.
