The 10 coolest swords in The Legend of Zelda series

by on December 2, 2021

Swords, bows, or spears? Over the years, Link has built a pretty impressive arsenal of weaponry to choose from, yet he is perhaps most famed for his skills with a sword. Short or broad? One-handed or two? Power or beauty? With plenty of options to choose from, it’s hard to narrow down what the best swords are from The Legend of Zelda games. Anyone’s personal favorites aside, an argument can be made that the swords listed here are the coolest ones Link has ever wielded.

10. Elemental Blades

Flame, Frost, or Thunder – it’s impossible to narrow it down to one.

In Breath of the Wild, Link has the opportunity to use one- or two-handed magical blades imbued with either fire, ice, or lightning. It is almost impossible to choose between the single-handed Flameblade, Frostblade, and Thunderblade or their Great two-handed counterparts when trying to decide which is the coolest. Maybe you could choose your favorite element and call it the best. When you put aside your favorite element and consider what powerhouses these swords are as a whole, it’s easy to see why it’s better to choose the category of blades is instead of just choosing one.

9. Savage Lynel Sword

Sums up the challenge in defeating the Golden Lynel for his sword.

It’s true that in Breath of the Wild, Link attains most of his weapons by defeating enemies. But there are really not many weapons you can earn from defeating enemies that are as awe-striking as the Savage Lynel Sword. While there are other types of Lynel Swords, the Savage Lynel Sword shows that you have felled the mightiest of Lynels. The design of the sword itself is rather primitive yet fierce, showing that only a true warrior can wield it. Defeating the strongest Lynels and carrying its weapon after the fact helps cement Link’s status as one of the mightiest denizens in all of Hyrule.

8. The Four Sword

Four swords equal four times the fun.

With its classic design, the Four Sword is also sometimes known as the Sacred Blade or Sacred Sword. This is one blade that is not originally from Hyrule, giving it an air of mystery that many of its counterparts may not have. Introduced in Four Swords, this magical blade possesses a unique power that cements its place among its brethren on the list. With this sword, Link can split into four copies of himself. Four copies mean four times the fun and four times the world-saving ability. No other sword can claim this honor.

7. Biggoron’s Sword

Simple in design, yet mighty.

If you like two-handed swords and trading quests, then the Biggoron’s Sword is for you. Originally introduced as the end to a lengthy trading quest in Ocarina of Time, what it may be lacking with its simple design, it more than makes up for with its power. This sword packs quite a punch with double the amount of power of the Master Sword. Being a two-handed blade, Link cannot shield while using it, but this sword can easily cut down virtually foe in its path with its impressive length and power.

6. Phantom Sword

Much more solid than its name would suggest.

Appearing in Phantom Hourglass, the Phantom Sword leads Link on an epic quest to forge it. Being able to tell the tale of how the sword came to be is not something every swordsman can do, which definitely ups the cool factor of the Phantom Sword. In addition, being the only weapon that can harm Bellum and the Phantoms grants it a sense of importance and distinction that many other swords would love to have.

5. Great Fairy’s Sword

That’s one good-looking sword.

Majora’s Mask has no shortage of incredible weapons. The Great Fairy’s Sword is no exception. It is one of the most aesthetically pleasing swords that Link gains, no doubt because it is styled after the Great Fairies. As a two-handed sword, it is incredibly powerful and is one of the strongest swords in the game, along with the Fierce Deity Sword. This sword goes to show that beauty and brawn can be an effective combination.

4. Goddess Sword

The sword and her spirit.

A legendary blade crafted by the Goddess herself for her Chosen Hero in Skyward Sword. There’s no other sword with a destiny quite like this one. The fantastical lore surrounding the Goddess Sword is nothing compared to how the blade itself — along with its fantastical powers and sword-dwelling spirit guide, Fi — helps Link solidify his path toward fulfilling his true destiny. If you look closely, you’ll notice the design of this sword is highly reminiscent of one of the other iconic weapons you’ll find on this list.

3. Scimitar of Twilight

Looks quite menacing.

There are few weapons in any Zelda game that look as menacing as the Scimitar of Twilight. While this is not a sword that Link actually wields in Twilight Princess, it makes it no less fierce-looking. Zant is the keeper of this blade and uses it to revive the Stallord — but not much else is known about its capabilities. Perhaps one day we may encounter it again and come to know more.

2. Fierce Deity Sword

This is a sword that is not easily forgotten.

From its unique look alone, the Fierce Deity Sword from Majora’s Mask is near impossible to forget. It is a two-handed powerhouse with impeccable style that can strike both physical and magical blows to enemies when Link dons the Fierce Deity Mask. Can’t get enough of this sword? You’re in luck because the Majora’s Mask amiibo allows you to have the chance to spawn the Fierce Deity sword within Breath of the Wild — no mask required.

1. Master Sword

The Sword that Seals the Darkness.

The Blade of Evil’s Bane. The Sword that Seals the Darkness. There are precious few things that are more well-known in the Zelda franchise than the Master Sword. First introduced in A Link to the Past, the Master Sword has been a staple in many games since then. It is typically the weapon used to defeat and seal the scourge of Hyrule — which makes up for the fact that sometimes the Master Sword isn’t truly the strongest weapon in the game.

But it’s not the blade’s power and story that make it special (remember its connection to the Goddess Sword?). Its design is truly timeless, and with its colors changing only a little from game to game, players can easily recognize the sword that leads Link on the path to his destiny. It’s only fitting that the Master Sword retains its identity after all these years. After all, a chosen hero on a grand journey needs an iconic sword worth legend.
