A new, affordable housing development is coming to Charlestown, Indiana.The project, which has not been named, received a zoning change Wednesday night from the Charlestown City Council."When you drive by this project and look at it, you will not be able to tell it from any other market-rate housing here in town," said developer Jake Brown, founder and president of The Marian Group.The apartment complex will be located at 101 Market Street, not far from Indiana State Highway 62, and will have five buildings with 190 units.Current plans call for the rent to range from $700 for a one-bedroom apartment to $1,300 for a three-bedroom apartment, and the units will be reserved for residents who make less than 80 percent of Clark County's median household income, Brown said.Continuing coverage: These are the southern Indiana nonprofit groups helping tenants facing evictionAffordable housing is badly needed in the area, according to a recent report from the nonprofit Prosperity Indiana. Of Clark County's low-income renters, 72 percent spend more than half of their income on rent, while experts recommend spending 30 percent or less on rent, according to the report.The affordable housing development will also benefit the nearby River Ridge Commerce Center, which is attracting more residents to the area, said Charlestown Mayor Treva Hodges."They've got to live somewhere and right now the housing is not enough," Hodges said.
