A Salem family of four is battling the coronavirus, including a father and his 12-year-old daughter who are in the intensive care unit at Massachusetts General Hospital.
The father, Mike DeCelle, and daughter, Mikayla, were unvaccinated and became seriously ill. They're both hooked up to breathing machines, but the family says they're showing small signs of improvement.
The pregnant mother and another daughter, who were both vaccinated, also tested positive but experienced mild symptoms. Three extended family members also tested positive.
"I do think that the vaccine played a pretty big role in how our symptoms showed," said daughter Kylie DeCelle. "Because this whole household, my grandma's house, we were all vaccinated and we didn't really show too many symptoms. But obviously my sister and my dad, they showed the worst symptoms out of all of us."
Mike DeCelle is a self-employed tow-truck driver and the family currently has no income while he recovers. A family friend established an online fundraising campaign to help support them.
Mike DeCelle and his wife are expecting their third child in February. She has been staying at the hospital to be close to her husband and daughter.
Mike DeCelle said he had planned to get vaccinated before the baby arrived.
