This time of year, people focus on finding that perfect Christmas tree... and hopefully the pursuit of it is better than Clark Griswold's experience.
The name Strathmeyer in York has almost become synonymous with Christmas tree.
"I'm going to say early 1900s, late 1800s my great grandfather used to own corner grocery stores in and around York." said Gerrit Strathmeyer, president of Strathmeyer Christmas Trees. "One of the things they did was they would go up into the mountains or hills up near Pinchot Park and cut down anything that was green."
They would then sell the greens, like Christmas trees, on their porch. That's how it all began.
People from out of state like New York and Virginia drive all the way to Strathmeyer just to get their tree.
Strathmeyer also gets a lot of help this time of year from high schoolers.
"One of the things I teach all of the kids is that we're really not selling Christmas trees. We're selling a Christmas tradition," said Strathmeyer. "And you have the honor of being part of some family's Christmas tradition."
This Christmas tradition they sell is part of the reason people keep coming from afar.
Strathmeyer Christmas Trees has been involved with the Make-A-Wish Foundation for decades. They're also involved with Trees For Troops, which donates a tree to service men and woman.
"There's a card that goes on the bottom of the tree and the person donating the money writes a note to the service people." said Strathmeyer.
Having a real Christmas tree, according to Strathmeyer, also gives back to the environment.
"When you're done with it in your house, you can put it outside. It becomes a bird feeder, a safe haven for rabbits or whatever." said Strathmeyer.
You can even turn the tree into fresh mulch.
Strathmeyer used to set up three Christmas trees in house, but his kids have all grown up.
"Now they're all gone, so now we have one tree.” said Strathmeyer.
But that fifth generation of Strathmeyers will continue selling not just a tree, but a tradition. A tradition that will ensure for many, that their holiday season be merry and bright.
