Maryland's former first lady is running to become the state's next attorney general.Katie Curran O'Malley has spent decades as the daughter of, and wife of, elected leaders in Maryland, and on Thursday, the Democrat became a candidate in her own right by officially launching a primary bid to replace retiring Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh."As attorney general, I will work hard to protect Marylanders from violent crime, fight for them and pursue justice for them every single day," O'Malley said in a campaign video.O'Malley's announcement comes about a month after she stepped down as a Baltimore City District Court judge, a job she had held for 20 years."I want Maryland voters to know that I really want this job so that I can help people," O'Malley told 11 News.O'Malley, 59, is a mother of four who went to law school at night. She is also the daughter of Maryland's longest-serving attorney general, Joe Curran.Now locked in a primary battle with Democratic U.S. Rep. Anthony Brown, who served as lieutenant governor under her husband, former Gov. Martin O'Malley.This may be Katie Curran O'Malley's first-ever bid for elected office, but she said she has the experience to hit the ground running on day one."It's a really important role, and after 30 years of being a public service lawyer, I think I'm the best person to do that job," she said.Katie Curran O'Malley said she'll continue the Frosh's work. She is excited about the newly created independent investigative unit and said criminal justice reform is at the top of her to-do list."I think there are some needed reforms in our criminal justice system that I will work towards," she said.If her 2022 bid is successful, Katie Curran O'Malley would be Maryland's first female attorney general.Primary election day is June 28.
