Interstate 75 near Alachua-Columbia county line back open after ‘shooting incident’

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol said a suspect is in custody after a “shooting incident” shut down all northbound and southbound lanes on Interstate 75 in Alachua County just south of the Columbia County line on Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened near mile marker 406, which is just north the NW County Road 236 exit at mile marker 404.

Deputies said the driver didn’t stop and they followed the driver into Alachua County.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said it started with an attempted traffic stop because the driver was speeding.

After they stopped the car, deputies said the person ran off and fired a gun.

Traffic was being diverted to the U.S. 41/U.S. 441 exit at mile marker 399 in High Springs.

Though all lanes are back open, FHP said traffic in the area is very heavy and delays should still be expected.
