GIBSON COUNTY, Ind (WEHT) – Both lanes of U.S. 41 near 150 S in Gibson County were closed due to an accident on Thursday involving eight vehicles including a semi-truck. The southbound lanes have now been reopened.
The Gibson County Sheriff’s Office says that drivers should take an alternate route and expect delays as crews work to repair and replace stoplights damaged by the wreck. The incident happened just before 4 p.m. on Thursday.
Princeton Fire Department chief Nick Medler says the number of cars, along with the timing of the wreck added some challenges to their efforts, saying that while it may not have made their jobs more difficult, they needed to be more “strategic” in how they approached the scene.
Officials say that two people were extricated from a truck and that five people were taken to a hospital including the driver of the semi-truck.
Truck drivers like John Culver say the intersection where the wreck happened is a known problem area for drivers. Culver says black rubber marks on the pavement in both directions are a sign that the lights need to be a little longer to help drivers go northbound and southbound through the intersection.
