U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville attended a fundraiser for senate candidate Katie Britt on Wednesday night, his staff confirmed today.

However, Tuberville stands by his earlier statements that he does not plan to endorse any candidate for the 2022 primary to elect the successor to Alabama’s other U.S. senator, Richard Shelby, who is retiring. Former President Donald Trump has endorsed U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks for the position.

“It was a meaningful time for Katie to be in our nation’s capital, and she continues to pray for life as the Supreme Court now weighs a decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization,” said Sean Ross, spokesperson for the Britt campaign. “While there, Katie again enjoyed visiting with Senator Tuberville, who is doing a tremendous job for our state and our nation. Like Senator Tuberville proved in 2020, Katie knows we need fresh blood, not an ineffective career politician, in the Senate to fight for hardworking Alabamians -- including our incredible farmers -- and preserve the American Dream. She looks forward to working with Coach to protect their shared Christian conservative values.”

Politico reported on the Britt fundraiser, noting it was also attended by another staunch Trump supporter, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. The report included a link to a photo of Tuberville with Britt at the event.

“As the Alabama Senate primary race heats up with some polls showing candidate Katie Britt leading the Trump-endorsed Rep. Mo Brooks, guests at a fundraiser for Britt on Wednesday were surprised to see Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) in attendance,” Politico reported in today’s Politico Playbook feature. “The reason: Tuberville hasn’t endorsed in the race. His appearance was naturally interpreted by some as a nod of support.”

The fundraiser was held in Washington, D.C., by Republican establishment leaders.

“The fundraiser was co-hosted by former GOP senate chiefs Joe Hack, Olivia Kurtz, Mike House and Kate Dickens at S-3 Group’s townhouse on C Street,” Politico reported. “Also spotted: Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Marc Short, Jeff Miller, Rachel Pearson, Katie Walsh, Mike Williams, Gina Rigby and Cindy Hayden.
