Netflix‘s fizzy romantic dramedy Emily in Paris became a love-it-or-hate-it sensation when its first season premiered last year. But after the show received backlash over its 2021 Golden Globes nominations and white-centric production, star Lily Collins says Emily in Paris Season 2 took steps towards better diversity and inclusion on and off-camera.

Earlier this year, the Netflix series earned two Golden Globe nominations: one for Best Musical/Comedy Series, and a lead actress nod for Collins. Many critics pointed out that nominating Emily in Paris over more acclaimed series by and starring people of color was another example of Hollywood’s exclusionary whiteness. Emily in Paris writer Deborah Copaken even wrote a piece for The Guardian expressing her rage over the Globes snubbing Michaela Coel’s celebrated 2020 dramedy I May Destroy You.

At least it sounds like the Emily in Paris team have taken these criticisms to heart in a positive way. In a new interview with Glamour, Collins said the backlash led to the the cast and crew having “lots of conversations” about making the show more reflective of the real-life City of Light.

“I was really passionate about including [more] women, people of color, and also sexual orientation, to really show more of what the world is, and be a part of the Emily family,” Collins said. “If there’s ever an opportunity to be better, do better, and have more representation and inclusion, you should run with it.”

She added that while she didn’t expect the series to become part of a Golden Globes controversy in the way it was, “I felt like it was definitely an opportunity to be able to do better in Season 2. It was definitely difficult to go through in a sense, but nowhere near as difficult as what the overall conversation was. And that was what was most important.”

After making changes on and offscreen, Collins teased a new and improved take on Emily in Paris this time around.  “You really go into different areas of the city, and see Emily trying a little harder and making an effort in her new city,” she said. “She’s really leaning into the environment and allowing herself to embrace it and become one with it.”

Emily in Paris Season 2 premieres December 22, 2021 on Netflix.
