Landlords and tenants who want to apply for emergency rental assistance in Prince George’s County have a deadline to apply by December 15 at 3 p.m.
The county’s Department of Housing and Community Development has been offering relief to landlords to cover the rent for eligible tenants who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Emergency Rental Assistance Program, supported by state and federal fund, is designed to help renters stay in their homes and to help landlords keep up with their mortgages on the properties.
Prince George’s County has been leading the state in providing rental assistance, helping more than 5,200 households avoid eviction by paying out more than $42 million in rent and utility payments to landlords since March 2021, according to a statement from DHCD.
In reviewing applications for assistance, the county program will prioritize low-income households facing eviction and residents with addresses in a census tract of greatest vulnerability.
Applications can be made to cover past due rent beginning April 1, 2020, up to 18 months and past due utility and home energy bill payments, up to 18 months.
WHO CAN APPLY?
- Property owners, landlords or property managers. The property must be occupied by tenants meeting the requirements for tenant eligibility.
- Tenants whose landlords will not apply for funding on the tenants' behalf
- Tenants applying for utility assistance only
