Bays, Saints notch wins in season openers

BRIMLEY — The Brimley Bays tipped off girls basketball season with a 61-25 win over Harbor Light Christian Tuesday night.

Vivian Carrick and Autumn Tremblay scored 16 points apiece to lead the Bays. 

The Bays raced to a 18-2 first quarter lead and pushed their advantage to 34-11 by halftime.

“I thought we looked a little nervous at the start,” Brimley coach Matt Bathey said. “We haven’t had any scrimmages or competition other than within our own team. Once we got going, we played pretty well. It was a good start.”

Kelsey Lyons scored six points, while Sadie McGuire notched five points,  five assists and three steals, and Reece Pesola had five points for the Bays. Carrick also dished out nine assists and had four rebounds and four steals, while Tremblay added six rebounds and six steals. 

Brimley jumps into Eastern UP Conference play with a home game against Rudyard Friday night. The junior varsity game is scheduled for 5:45 p.m., followed by the varsity matchup.

St. Ignace 53, Charlevoix 9

The Saints cruised past the Red Rayders in a non-conference season opening game Tuesday night.

Senior Ally Schultz scored 17 points, while freshman Jillian Fraser had 11 points for the Saints.

The Saints led 39-2 at halftime, and 46-4 through three quarters.

Schultz also compiled seven steals, seven assists, five rebounds and four blocks. Allison Cece added five rebounds, three steals and two points.

St. Ignace visits Boyne City on Tuesday.
