Today, The View‘s panel had plenty of words for the Supreme Court after Tuesday arguments about a proposed Mississippi law banning abortions after 15 weeks left many Americans worried about conservative justices overturning Roe v. Wade. While host Sunny Hostin said that she personally doesn’t believe in abortion as someone raised in the Catholic faith, she argued that lawyers need to understand the importance of personal belief versus legal precedence.

“[I understand] that not everyone believes what I believe,” she said. “And as a lawyer, I understand that I should never confuse church and state, and that I should never impose my beliefs on anyone else.”

Hostin specifically called out Justice Amy Coney Barrett, a fellow graduate of Notre Dame law school, whose arguments in favor of the abortion ban she called “very disingenuous.”

“I wasn’t really concerned that [Roe v. Wade] would be overturned, but Justice Sotomayor has been ringing this alarm for us for quite some time,” Hostin continued. “She really made the argument that the change in this decision would solely be due to the new composition of the court. And now I am worried about Roe v. Wade.”

“I’m fine if you disagree with abortion, I have no problem with that,” moderator Whoopi Goldberg added. “My problem comes when you tell me what I need to do with my doctor and my family. How dare you!”

Sara Haines argued that if Roe v. Wade is overturned, it won’t stop abortions — only safe abortions. She pointed out that actress Rita Moreno, who appeared on the show earlier this week, recently opened up about nearly bleeding out when she was forced to get an illegal, near-fatal abortion.

“This is gonna put the people who have the least among us in more danger with less options,” Haines said. “And [these conservative justices] definitely aren’t gonna up their social offers in helping these babies and mothers when they’re on their own.”

Guest host Ana Navarro pointed out that overturning Roe v. Wade and abortion rights is overwhelmingly unpopular among Americans — 75% of Americans think choice should be up to a pregnant person and their doctor, while 60% think Roe v. Wade should be upheld. “There are going to be serious repercussions,” Navarro said.
