World of Warcraft opens up the public test realm for patch 9.2, Eternity’s End

When the counterprogramming gets kind of sad.

It’s going to be a while before World of Warcraft is ready to let players enjoy patch 9.2 on the live realms, but if you don’t mind a shifting melange of systems that are still being balanced by the developers’ own admission, you can try it out now. Yes, the public test realm is being rolled out now, letting players hop in and try out the game’s next update to their hearts’ content.

This is, of course, wholly unconnected to anything else going on in the MMO sphere at the moment.

Players will be able to purchase the new tier sets introduced with the game’s latest raid from a vendor for purposes of testing the set bonuses, with the raid and the newly split Tazavesh available for players to take part. There’s also the new Cypher of the First Ones in the zone of Zereth Mortis as well as reputations, item rewards, and the like to be tested out. While everything is subject to change (it is the first version of the test server, after all), it should provide content-starved players with something new to do.

Meanwhile, the hits keep on coming for the game as a whole, as players are reporting that language filter hotfixes for the game wound up DDoSing the game’s servers and caused a large number of Hardcore characters in WoW Classic‘s Season of Mastery to get unceremoniously killed. So that’s a thing.

Activision-Blizzard is considered a controversial company in the MMO and gaming space owing to a long string of scandals over the last few years, including the Blitzchung boycott, mass layoffs, labor disputes, and executive pay fiasco. In the summer of 2021, the company was sued by the state of California for fostering a work environment riddled with sexual harassment and discrimination, the disastrous corporate response to which has further compounded Blizzard’s ongoing pipeline issues and the widespread perception that its online games are in decline. As of fall 2021, multiple state and federal agencies are currently investigating the company and the industry has called for Bobby Kotick’s resignation following fresh reports on his misdeeds.
