If your plan for decking the halls includes adding a festive garland over your front door, you may be wondering how to do it in a secure way that doesn't damage your exterior. You don't want to drill holes in your house—but if your greenery isn't well fastened, it may fall down and even become a tripping hazard as you leave your home. To help solve this dilemma, we turned to Amy Studebaker, owner and principal designer of Amy Studebaker Design, for expert advice.

What You Will Need

You don't need an arsenal of supplies for this task—here's what you should have on hand:

  • Hooks
  • Floral wire
  • Stepladder
  • Garland

Choose the Best Hooks for Your Exterior

Your home's door frame or exterior siding type will inform your hanging method, says Studebaker. By purchasing clips that are specifically designed for the material, not only will you prevent the hooks from damaging the surface, but you'll also create the best possible hold, ensuring that your garland stays exactly where you want it. You can find siding-specific hooks for brick, vinyl, and cinderblock. "If possible, consult your builder on what type of hook or hanging method they think is best," she says.

Flower Wire is Key

If you don't already have this florist's essential in your supplies, you will need it now. "Flower wire is a must," says Studebaker.

Hanging Your Garland

Follow these easy steps to hang your garland securely and evenly.

Step One: Install the Hooks

"I make sure that there are three hook locations to secure the garland with—one at the top and one on either side of the door frame," says Studebaker. This method will keep your garland more secure so that it won't come loose. A stepladder is helpful, too, and will allow you to reach the area above the door to mount the hooks and garland.

Step Two: Hang From the Center

Find the middle of the garland and secure it to the top hook. The easiest way to hang your garland is to start in the middle, says Studebaker. "Putting up the garland on one side and working your way across won't always result in proper placement," she says. "If you begin at the top and work your way down on both of the sides, the garland will lay much better and swoop down in a really beautiful way."

Step Three: Secure the Garland

Loop the floral wire around your garland securely to whatever hanging mechanism you're using, says Studebaker. Make sure that the garland doesn't interfere with the opening or closing of the door—add any final festive touches and then enjoy your holiday handiwork.
