To the Editor:
The Syracuse win over Indiana was an exciting game, especially for those in attendance at the Carrier Dome. On the surface, it appears that Syracuse University is doing all it can to protect fans from Covid. The reality is quite different. Fans are asked to show proof of Covid vaccination on entrance, told to wear a mask, and reminded about mask use throughout the game — with the threat that they may be asked to leave if they don’t comply.
At the recent game, my estimate is that 20-30% of fans, and 80-90% of the student section ignored the mask request for much of the game. While it may be hard to enforce this policy, there does not seem to be any attempt at all by staff to do that, and I doubt anyone was asked to leave for lack of mask use.
Maybe it is time to just stop the “mask charade” — no more announcements that you will be asked to leave. Or perhaps, given the high level of Covid in the community it might be time to go back to games without the students or the general public for a while. That might change some behavior.
Finally, another suggestion: If the " mask charade” is to continue, why not show groups of unmasked fans on the video board with a message “mask up — this means you too!”, rather than just showing cheering fans from time to time.
Given our community levels of Covid and the potential for a new and worrisome variant, it is time for the university to get a bit more serious, to create some accountability, and show both fans, and importantly their students, that rules are there for a reason and consequences follow for those who choose not to comply.
Time for everyone to try harder ... for the sake of all of the loyal fans.
