A Salem father and his 12-year-old daughter, both intubated in the intensive care unit at Massachusetts General Hospital, are stable but have made limited progress against the virus in recent days, according to their family.
Mike and Mikayla DeCelle were both separately taken to Salem Hospital within the last week. Mike was transferred to MGH with dangerously low oxygen levels and later sedated and intubated, a GoFundMe page set up by close friends said. After first being brought to the hospital with breathing troubles Thanksgiving night, Mikayla was transferred to MGH and intubated Monday.
The entire family, including mother Erica, pregnant with a boy due in February, and other daughter Kylie, has tested positive for the virus. Both are vaccinated and have experienced mild symptoms. Neither Mike nor Mikayla were vaccinated.
Since being intubated, both Mike and Mikayla’s conditions have been stable, Erica wrote on the GoFundMe page Tuesday. Hospital staff have turned both patients onto their stomachs, a process known as “prone positioning,” which can increase the amount of oxygen getting to the lungs, according to CNN.
The GoFundMe page was organized by Ryan LeMay — who previously worked with Mike — and his wife, Ashley. Since being set up Friday, the campaign has raised more than $42,000.
As of Wednesday, an update to the GoFundMe said, both Mike and Mikayla’s conditions had allowed for the hospital to lower the amount of oxygen they were being given.
“Obviously things can change very quickly in the ICU,” the LeMays wrote, “but for right now these are both positives.”
