Men’s Hoops Drops Road Contest to Akron

Kinsey, Taylor net season-high scoring totals

Box Score D'Antoni Press Conference

AKRON, Ohio – Marshall men's basketball (4-3) overcame a nine-point, halftime deficit, but fell short to the Akron Zips (4-3), 88-86, on Wednesday night at James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio.

"I don't look at one person. It has to be a group effort. I'm frustrated that we came out soft," Marshall men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the loss. "I've got to find a way to make sure that we're not just making good plays. Making good plays does not qualify as playing good. Qualifying as playing good is playing as hard as you can, making good plays and playing smart. Right now we are not exemplifying that."

Junior Taevion Kinsey had 30 points on a 12-for-21 shooting night from the field. Redshirt sophomore Andrew Taylor followed with 26 points making 10 of his 17 shots. Each had a team-high four assists with Taylor finishing tied with a team-high five rebounds, along with freshman Aymeric Toussaint

Freshman David Early scored 11 points as he made half of his shots from the field, 4-for-8, and three-point range, 3-for-6.

Akron's Enrique Freeman tallied 24 points and 14 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.

The Zips came out and made their first five shots as the Herd trailed 13-4 just over two minutes into the contest.

Kinsey and Taylor then led MU on a 10-2 run with five points each to pull within one, 15-14, at the 13:05 mark in the first half.

After Akron scored the next three points, Taylor drilled a three and Kinsey made a layup on an assist from freshman Kyle Braun to give Marshall its first lead of contest, 19-18, with just under 10 minutes left in the opening stanza.

The two sides proceeded to trade baskets and the lead, until the Zips outscored MU 19-10 in the final six minutes and led 49-40 at halftime. Taylor led Marshall with 16 points by going 6-for-9 from the field in the first half.

Akron scored nine of the first 13 points to start the second half and took its lead to 12 points, 56-44, with 17:36 left in the contest.

However, sophomore Marko Sarenac, Taylor and Early each hit a three to send the Green and White on a 9-2 run and cut its deficit to 58-53 one minute later. Then after a Zips basket, Taylor made a layup, Kinsey had four points and Early drained a three to give Marshall a two-point lead, 62-60, with 14:31 on the clock.

With five ties and eight lead changes, the Zips tied the contest, 86-86, when Freeman completed an and-one opportunity with 24 ticks on the clock. Taylor then missed a jumper at the other end and fouled Freeman on the rebound.

Freeman made both free throw attempts with four seconds remaining as Marshall trailed 88-86. Kinsey fired a three as time expired, but it just missed the mark.
