PIT@EDM: Hyman one-times feed from McDavid

EDMONTON --Connor McDavid had a goal and three assists for the Edmonton Oilers in a 5-2 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Rogers Place on Wednesday.

Zach Hyman scored two goals, Evan Bouchard had a goal and an assist, and Mikko Koskinen made 32 saves for Edmonton (16-5-0), which has won three in a row and five of six.
"We kind of held on there for the first 40," McDavid said. "Mikko did a great job as usual, and I thought our young D … did a good job of stepping in and tried to keep the game simple, keep the game in front of them, and we worked our way through the game. We capitalized on our chances and we got some timely saves."

Jake Guentzel extended his point streak to 11 games for Pittsburgh (10-8-5), which is 0-2-1 in its past three games. Tristan Jarry allowed four goals on 21 shots after allowing three goals on 175 shots (.983 save percentage) in his previous six starts.
"We knew they were going to push in the third. It would have been nice to grab the lead (in the second), but we were still in a good spot and we were playing good going into the third," Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said. "We just make a few mistakes and it ends up in the back of the net. We had some good pressure, some good zone time for most of the night, and you give them any opening and they take advantage of it."
Hyman made it 1-0 at 6:52 of the first period. He carried the puck across the Penguins' blue line on the left wing, cut across the high slot and beat Jarry blocker side on the Oilers' first shot of the game.
Guentzel tied it 1-1 at 14:55 on a set play off a face-off won by Crosby against Leon Draisaitl. After Crosby won the draw back to John Marino, Guentzel skated across the ice for a one-timer from the right circle.
Guentzel has scored 12 points (seven goals, five assists) during his streak, which is the longest active in the NHL.

Hyman made it 2-1 at 16:16, converting a pass from McDavid on a 2-on-1.
"He's just so good at creating something from nothing," Crosby said of McDavid. "There is not a lot a lot of danger going on and all of a sudden he's on a 2-on-1 or he's got fast break. It's a pretty small margin for error, and they get a couple of 2-on-1s and execute them well, and that's kind of what it came down to."
Teddy Blueger tied it 2-2 at 1:00 of the second period when he finished a back-and-forth passing play with Evan Rodrigues.
"I thought we did a good job controlling territory (in first two periods). We were hanging on to pucks in the offensive zone," Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. "We wanted to try and limit their game in the transition zone, and I think on every goal they scored, it was mental errors on our part that kind of fed their transition game. They had a couple of 2-on-1s, and they scored on every one of them. They're an opportunistic group. They don't need a lot of chances and they finished on the ones we gave them."
Kailer Yamamoto redirected a point shot from Tyson Barrie at 2:53 of the third period to make it 3-2. Bouchard then extended the lead to 4-2 at 7:54 during a 4-on-4, tapping in a pass from McDavid on a 2-on-1.
"We were better in the third. We just turned the puck over far too much in the first couple (periods). We just couldn't get any rhythm to our game whatsoever. We were just batting it around like it was a tennis ball," Edmonton coach Dave Tippett said. "Once we got to work, we still turned it over a few times, but we still worked to get it back in the third. We were opportunistic with some of the chances we had, we had some good chances and we capitalized on them."

PIT@EDM: Bouchard finishes off McDavid's pass on rush

Hyman appeared to have scored his first NHL hat trick at 11:25 of the third, but Sullivan challenged the play for offside, and the call was reversed after a video review.
"Eventually it will happen. I'm happy to score when I can and help the team win," Hyman said. "It was fun almost getting a hat trick there. I'm happy we were up 4-2; it was fun to experience that. It doesn't officially count, but just to get the crowd reaction to it was pretty cool."
McDavid scored into an empty net at 17:49 for the 5-2 final. He was looking to pass the puck to Hyman to get his third goal back, but Rodrigues had him covered.
"Obviously I'm trying to get him that puck, I almost feel guilty putting it in the net" McDavid said. "But Rodrigues kind of just glued himself to [Hyman], and obviously you have to put it away as well."
