12/1/2021 10:20:00 PM | Women's Basketball

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Central Michigan women's basketball team made a valiant fourth-quarter comeback but fell just short on Wednesday in dropping a 59-54 nonconference game to Cincinnati at the Bearcats' Fifth Third Arena.

CMU ends its three-game road trip at 2-4, having earned its second season win at Marist on Nov. 28. The Chippewas will host nonconference opponent Oakland on Tuesday, Dec. 7 (11 a.m.) at McGuirk Arena.

Cincinnati (4-3) outscored CMU, 19-5, in the second quarter for a 42-23 halftime lead. The Chippewas were still down 19, 56-37, entering the fourth quarter when they went on a 17-2 tear, drawing to 58-54 with under two minutes remaining.

CMU could get no closer as it missed its final five field goal attempts over the final 1:40. Cincinnati added a free throw with five seconds remaining for the final margin.

Molly Davis scored eight of her 20 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Chippewas, while Tiana Timpe added 11 points. Davis and Timpe hit two triples apiece in the fourth quarter to lead the surge. The Chippewas hit five of their nine 3-pointers in the final 10 minutes.

Anika Weekes tied her career high with 15 rebounds to lead CMU on the boards. Davis matched her season high with six assists.

The Chippewas made 35.2 percent of their field goal attempts and seven of their 12 free throw tries.
