Opera San José is set to present Bizet’s “Carmen” to open the new year.

The production, which will be shown at the California Theatre in downtown San José, will be conducted by Joseph Marcheso. The production will be reimagined with stage direction by Lillian Groag and feature a new collaboration with the acclaimed Flamenco Society of San José.

As a result, dance, singing, and drama will come together to tell the passionate tale of a defiant heroine whose rebellious quest for freedom seals her tragic fate.

Mezzo-soprano Nikola Printz will headline the production as Carmen alongside tenor Noah Stewart as Don José, soprano Anne-Marie MacIntosh as Micaëla, baritone Eugene Brancoveanu as Escamillo, bass-baritone Leo Radosavljevic as Zuniga, bass-baritone Peter Morgan as Morales, soprano Teresa Castillo as Frasquita, mezzo-soprano Stephanie Sanchez at Mercédès, and tenor Jared V. Esguerra as Remendado.

“Carmen” will open on Feb. 12 and will run until Feb. 27, 2022.
