SEA@DET: Erne leads Red Wings to SO win in Round 4

DETROIT -- Less than 24 hours after beating the Boston Bruins, the Detroit Red Wings returned to Little Caesars Arena and defeated the Seattle Kraken, 4-3, in the first shootout for both teams on Wednesday.
Detroit extended its season-long winning streak to four games, upping its record to 12-9-3 on the season. The Kraken fell to 8-14-1.
The Red Wings received goals from Robby Fabbri, Vladislav Namestnikov, Lucas Raymond and the shootout winner from Adam Erne, while goalie Thomas Greiss made 21 saves to earn his fifth win of the season and the 150th of his career.

"Sometimes when you get in late you don't play quite as smart as you need to play and I thought there was some of that out there tonight," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "But we were not at our best and we found a way to win, which I think is critically important. You want to learn lessons while you are winning. Certainly, there are lessons to be learned, but you want to do it while you are winning, and we did that."

Detroit will play the second game of its three-game homestand against the New York Islanders on Saturday night with a 7 p.m. puck drop from Little Caesars Arena.
Seattle thought it struck first with just under five minutes to play in the first period when Jeremy Lauzon found the back of the net. But after the officials gathered for a brief discussion, his goal was negated because Mason Appleton bumped Greiss before Lauzon's shot.
Detroit headed to its second power play of the period with 3:31 to play in the first period after Kraken center Morgan Geekie was called for slashing. With an ensuing advantage in the offensive zone, Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin fed Raymond near the Kraken bench, who fired the puck past Seattle goalie Philipp Grubauer. The Kraken successfully challenged the play after Raymond was confirmed offsides following the review.
The Red Wings opened the game's scoring 4:46 into the second period on a power play. After a shot from Larkin snuck past Grubauer and hit the post, his second attempt behind the end line bounced to Fabbri, who buried the shot for his fifth goal of the season, giving Detroit the 1-0 lead. Larkin and forward Pius Suter were each credited with an assist.

With 9:16 left in the second, Seattle answered with a power-play goal of its own. Kraken defenseman Vince Dunn collected a pass from forward Marcus Johansson and fired the puck past Greiss to even the score at 1-1.
A few minutes later, after Red Wings defenseman Jordan Oesterle lost his footing in Seattle's zone, Joonas Donskoi retrieved the puck and passed to Yanni Gourde, who fed Ryan Donato with an open net. Seattle took a 2-1 lead with 3:56 remaining in the second period.
In the closing minutes of the second period, Namestnikov, assisted by Oesterle and defenseman Moritz Seider, tallied his eighth goal of the season to make it a 2-2 game headed into the second intermission. It was Namestnikov's 99th career goal.

Raymond put Detroit ahead again, 3-2, at 6:30 of the third period. The NHL's November Rookie of the Month threw a wrister past Grubauer for his 10th goal of the season that was assisted by Larkin and Seider.
"I'm trying to find my game. I think I'm still learning every day and trying to get better at the areas that are my weaknesses and always trying to improve my strengths," Raymond said. "But I think overall, I'm trying to be an offensive forward and one you still count on defensively who plays hard every night."

Seattle evened the score (3-3) with just over five minutes remaining (14:56) into the final frame when Donato recovered a loose puck and beat Greiss. Neither team converted down the stretch, sending the game to a 3-on-3 overtime session.
Overtime also ended without a goal, as both teams headed to their first shootout of the 2021-22 campaign.
Larkin gave Detroit a 1-0 advantage in the second round of the shootout before Joonas Donskoi knotted things up in round 3. Erne scored in the fourth round followed by Greiss' glove save on Alex Wennberg to secure the two points and Detroit's fourth straight win both overall and at Little Caesars Arena.
"Adam has done a really good job here in Detroit. He's really had to earn his ice time," Blashill said. "I didn't understand as good of a level of the player that he has become. He has become a better player than the ice time that I gave him."
