A second deputy was shot and taken to a nearby Alabama hospital for his injuries. He is in good condition and recovering at his home, Wilcox County Sheriff Ernest Evans told Channel 3.
The two deputies were shot as they attempted to help a victim of domestic violence, according to Pensacola Police.
Sheriff Evans also told Channel 3 that the suspect shot himself and the SBI is leading an investigation on the entire incident that took place Wednesday night.
The Pensacola Police Department shared some words Wednesday night following the death of the deputy:
We are saddened and angry. We did not know either of these Deputies, but they are our brothers. Your PPD Officers and Escambia County Sheriff's Office Deputies will stand watch over the fallen Deputy through the night and tomorrow until he is taken home. While it is a small gesture, it is vitally important to us.
Pensacola Police hopes that the Pensacola community will keep the deputy and his family in their thoughts.
