Dan’s efforts to sell off his furniture dredged up family history during The Conners fall finale, culminating in an offhand remark from eldest daughter Becky.
With Louise finally moving into the family’s Delaware St. home, it was time for Dan to part ways with the bedroom set he bought shortly after he and Roseanne got married.
“Before this, it was lawn chairs in the living room and a phone company spool for a table. That’s when we were just starting out and I wasn’t the mogul I am now,” Dan deadpanned. “But your mom saw a picture of this set in the Montgomery Ward catalogue, and boy did she fall in love with it.”
Before he tossed the bed, Dan asked if anyone wanted it. DJ turned to Becky and proposed a game of Rock Paper Scissors to determine the loser who gets to keep “the mattress we were conceived on and Mom died on,” but his older sister shut him down.
“Ew!” she cried. “I don’t want a humpy, ghosty mattress!”
Dan explained to DJ that Louise wanted a new bedroom set — and since she paid for the wedding, he agreed to foot the bill for a new one. He was determined to sell the old fixtures to pay for a new bed and dressers, but — surprise, surprise! — no one was willing to pay top dollar for 43-year-old furniture. He ultimately decided to burn the old stuff, in celebration of what it symbolized, while surrounded by his loved ones outside the garage.
“This is a lot more than just a bedroom set,” Dan explained. “When I first married your mom, her family said I wouldn’t amount to anything. In a lot of ways, I thought they might be right. I had to prove to myself that they weren’t, so when your mom wanted this set, I worked my ass off for it — two jobs and a year of layaway — and when I finally brought it home, that’s when I realized I could step up and do the things I needed to do to be a husband and a father.”
“I always thought the vikings did it best,” he said, explaining his decision to burn the old bed and dressers. “Set it on fire, send it to the heavens.”
“And if it goes the other way, Mom gets her furniture back!” Becky exclaimed.
The Conners has frequently referenced the late Roseanne Conner, including earlier this season when Darlene found a heartbreaking note in her mother’s Bible foreshadowing her tragic 2018 overdose. And though this particular TV family is known for their biting humor, it did seem in somewhat poor taste for Becky to crack wise about her late mother burning in hell, did it not? (If the line was meant to throw shade at Roseanne Barr, it sure wasn’t delivered that way.)
What was your interpretation of that Roseanne joke? Was it in poor taste, seeing as how the family has shown no ill will towards their late matriarch since her death in 2018? Or was it in line with the Conner family’s usual brand of humor?
It was… hilarious :’D
I loved it Roseanne all the way.keep it coming. It’s a real life comedy thats what makes the show.she had a since of humor so carry on with it.Its what makes the show.again loved it.
do we maybe sometimes read too much into what is said on television shows?
This. They’d been speaking respectfully of Dan and Roseanne’s relationship up to that point, this was clearly a gentle ribbing. If Roseanne (the character) were here, I imagine she’d crack a similar joke. Because that’s how this family rolls.
Poor taste, maybe, but it honestly sounds like something my family would say even about someone we dearly loved. Dark humor abounds in some families.
Think your reading too much into it. I didn’t see that way. I thought it was hilarious.
I think you’re doing too much.
I’ll just say this and move on because I have no interest in fighting with people over this.
.
If everything that went down with Roseanne Barr hadn’t happened and her exit from the show was her decision or if she had passed away IRL, I’d say the joke would be spot on and in line with the OG show’s dark humor. However, considering what *did* happen and how “The Conners” came to be it definitely feels like they’re taking the piss out of Roseanne Barr and not Roseanne Conner.
If it was Jackie making a joke about Beverly, that would be one thing, but it was Becky talking about Roseanne, so I definitely don’t believe she thinks her mom is in hell.
Maybe it was a joke about being atheists and not believing in the concept of heaven or hell?
Every line of dialogue included in this article is atrocious. I’m a screenwriter and I’d be embarrassed to put my name to any of that. Actually, I wouldn’t let the script out of my sight before I’d dramatically improved that dialogue. I grew up watching the original show and part of the charm was that the characters spoke like real blue collar Americans. I don’t even know where to start when it comes to the dialogue in the new version.
Actually…said every pompous twat.
Oh please
What have you written…?
Yes. This was going to be my comment. I’d love to see Luke’s resume…
I have been a longtime fan of both shows and i found it very funnyI found it very funny
You’re better than this tvline. This was an off color joke and shot at Roseanne, but this article is straight click bait. It still fit the characters.
We’ve done a lot of afterlife talk this season on The Conners. Also, Dan and Roseanne bought a new mattress in an early season of Roseanne — “we will take the double over there” to which the sales rep replied, “and for the lady?”
“Way to defend my honor, Dan.”
“I believe they was directed at me, dear.”
“Oh?…(chuckles) good one.”
No, it was just Connor humor.
My Sister Mia & I want Roseanne back.so please bring Roseanne. Back. My sister & i wont watch unless 🌹 is back. Please. We both watch the repets of Roseanne.
Then don’t watch! Many of us enjoy the show without Roseanne.
It’s been three years. Get over it.
Ryan, have you watched this family from its beginning? I thought it was funny and totally on par for how they deal with everything (good, bad, sentimental) via sarcasm and humor.
I never watched The Conners. Still salty about Roseanne’s firing. But, yes, that line is in keeping with the Conners humor. I’m pretty sure Roseanne would’ve said something similar about a loved one. Now, please make all of this a bad dream and bring Roseanne back for the series finale.
Except… it’s not the mattress they were conceived on. Remember, during the original series, Dan & Roseanne replaced the mattress.
Exactly!! I was about to write that. They replaced the mattress when the show first introduced Mark. It was hate at first sight for Rosanne & Dan. They saw him at the Lobo with a fake ID and the beginning of Becky’s bad decisions in life.
I am sure it was hard to get rid of the bedroom furniture. After my mom died, I could still smell her in her room. I wouldn’t let my dad touch it for 6mos.
Nah. Much like Jerry, Andy, Bev being a lesbian, etc that was all part of the dream world. 🙄
I was all for the reboot because I love Rosanne’s blue collar humor BUT I did predict due to the toxic political climate her/Will&Grace would be ruined…we know how both hows ended!!!!! I don’t watch a show to hear “personal” political opinions just well written jokes!! So many shows relied too much on petty politics now losing jobs since he’s gone! Haha
Roseanne was canceled by the woke crowd. It was her show. They threw her out. She was the one who made them famous. She apologized. Not good enough. She is still providing them with money and royalties. That’s the thanks she got. Not one of them stood up for her.
Oh please Roseanne didn’t make anyone famous. John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf were already known. Honestly Roseanne acting skills were awful on the reboot and she was okay on the original show. Jackie, Dan and Darlene was the only reason I enjoyed the old show. All Roseanne had to do was keep her mouth shut. None of the other cast members made an ass out of themselves besides her. So stop making excuses for her.
I don’t think Roseanne needs much defending, but there’s defense and then there’s facts…what did you know Goodman and Metcalf from before Roseanne? They’re talented, and probably would have found success somewhere else, but I’ll wait for the list of things you remember them from before Roseanne before conceding that Roseanne wasn’t their big break.
You Are correct about Goodman and Metcalf but not Darleen ,Dj, Becky or David. She signed away the rights to the Conners because she cared enough about their jobs.
I gotta admit, the line surprised me. I have been a fan since Roseanne was Roseanne, from the pilot to the confusing series finale. Nowhere did I get a sense anyone had anger or animosity toward her. But, as someone in recovery herself, maybe Becky who delivered the line blames her departed mom for her own alcohol addiction. There is science that proves addiction is inherited genetically. So maybe Becky is angry.
Does everybody have to micro analyze everything that is on TV? It’s a make believe TV show for crying out loud. If one doesn’t like the show or whatever show one doesn’t like, most people today have over 300 channels to chose from. Find one and move on.
Barr always had a big mouth, but the media sure over reacted with her poor taste remark. OK, fair enough…but why didnt they go nuts when Samantha Bee called Ivanka Trump a c***?
Are you people Deaf??? Becky said IF THE wind goes a different way, Roseane would get her furniture back.
Just seened like more sarcasm from Becky, not to be taken seriously. .My wish is for them to bring back more of Jackie’s sweetness and toned down humor, less mugging for the camera, that Gilligan bit got old long ago. My favorite all time episode was when Jackie was going to marry Gary and Roseanne went nuts with the planning. Laurie Metcalf really shone in tbat episode. Then devolved into imitating Bob Denver for who knows why. WIth the right storyline and script, she really shone…
My fave Jackie episode was when Jackie stayed at Roseanne & Dan’s house and took care of Dan and the kids while Roseanne was away. Although Laurie could always pull off that Barney Fife/ Gilligan schtick, Jackie’s not a well rounded multifaceted character anymore like in original “Roseanne”. All of them were better characters when they were acting with Roseanne in the mix (though Becky’s pretty funny now).
Did anyone catch when DJ and Dan are hauling in the dresser, and DJ says “Dad, tell Mom what you’re asking for the dresser…”
Innocent mistake, but an interesting episode to do so.
It was funny and something you would expect at least one of the kids to say following Dans coment.it is a funny show .
If you’re not down with crass and dark, this might not be the best choice of show for you.
