History was made Wednesday, December 1 for high school girl's athletics across the state of Alabama.
The first ever girls flag football state championship game was played at Protective Stadium in downtown Birmingham.
Hewitt-Trussville High School took on Smiths Station High School.
Parents of players on the field and fans said we have reached a milestone in women's sports.
“What an amazing thing for girls though across the state to be able to do this,” said Hewitt-Trussville parent Rhonda Hindman.
Parents with senior players on the team said this has been an incredible experience for them to finally get the chance to play flag football their senior year.
“Hopefully this sport is going to grow and it's going to become a college sport soon, that would be really cool too,” said Hindman.
“Anytime girls can get out and compete and show off their strengths and their skills, that’s always a good thing so we are excited for them,” said Hewitt Trussville parent Stephanie Mcilwain.
One Smiths Station fan and former high school athlete said this was something that was always talked about.
“It was always just a hobby or something, they really couldn’t play competitively. So, I think it's really cool to see them get that opportunity. They get a chance to be on the big field that all the guys have always been on,” said April Corcoran.
