An Upstate man is encouraging people to be vigilant after he said someone stole three packages off his front porch in broad daylight.
"The best thing we’ve learned is get your packages out of sight," David Sharp said.
According to Sharp, the person took the packages around 3:45 p.m. and ran off to a car nearby. The incident was caught on his Ring camera.
"I would’ve thought that they would’ve seen that we had a video surveillance and that didn’t deter him," Sharp said. "He just ran in from the corner so it was the least amount of footage from the camera. He parked to the side in front of my neighbor's house."
Sharp said the person got away with the gifts but left the empty packages at the entrance of their neighborhood.
According to the Greenville Police Department, people stealing packages off porches is more common this time of year.
"Around the holiday season, we see a lot more people ordering stuff that's getting delivered to their house," Sgt. Johnathan Bragg said. "A lot of people are working during the days and we see packages that are left on the doorsteps and whatnot."
Sgt. Bragg said surveillance videos are helpful in their investigation.
"It's very clear pictures and we usually get good photos and video to identify the suspects and usually we’re able to make arrests from it,” Sgt. Bragg said.
To protect your packages this holiday season, police recommend getting your packages delivered to your work, the post office, a neighbor's house or to a secure location if you won't be home when they are scheduled to be delivered.
Sgt. Bragg said if you notice suspicious activity in your neighborhood to call police.
