It’s go time for winter athletes

Winter athletes around the state are ready to get back into the gym.

After a “normal” fall sports season, winter athletes are preparing for a conventional season after nearly two years of modified seasons.

Akron grapplers hit the mat for their first tournament this Saturday, December 4 at their own Chuck Annand Invite.  The Rams will be on the road for the first time next Saturday, December 11 when they head to the Limon Tournament.

The Akron boys are looking to improve on their 3-11 record, while their girl counterparts have a good core returning from last year’s 6-8 squad.  The Rams kick things off Friday, December 3 at home against the Merino Rams.  The teams will be home again next Tuesday, December 7.

In the south part of the county, the Arickaree-Woodlin Indian Mustangs kick off their season this weekend when they host the annual Jeff Sherman Memorial Tournament December 3-4 in Woodlin.  Last year’s boys finished out the year with a 5-5 record, while the Lady Indian Mustangs came in at 4-5.

The Lone Star boys are coming off a 6-7 year and the girls off a 10-5 year that finished just short of the state tournament.  The Longhorns hope to pick up where they left off as they hit the road for the Jeff Sherman Memorial Tournament this Friday and Saturday.  The team is scheduled to travel to Peetz next Tuesday, December 7.

Rounding out the county, Otis will take part in the Carlile Classic this Friday and Saturday in Peetz.  The boys’ basketball team is coming off a 3-11 performance, while the girls finished with a record of 2-12 last season.

As always, best of luck to all county athletes this winter!
