Cherokee’s run to the state finals in Columbus, likely would not have been possible without the contributions of infielder Lottie Landmesser.
Landmesser led the Lady Warriors to a 26-9 overall record, a 14-1 mark in Region 5AAAAAAA and a trip to Columbus. She was a force in the batter’s box, hitting a team-best nine home runs with a .396 batting average.
“This year was truly amazing and, by far, the best year I had,” said Landmesser, the 2021 Cherokee Tribune Softball Player of the Year. “I would not have been able to do it without my incredible teammates and all the hard work we put in this year, overcoming everything that was thrown at us, especially last season with COVID.”
Cherokee had talent all over the field this season, but Landmesser separated herself in coach Tonya Carlisle’s eyes. Carlisle called the junior a spark plug for the Lady Warriors’ high-powered offense.
“She had nine home runs this year, and I feel like, every time she was at bat, we had a shot,” Carlisle said. “She is the definition of a true competitor. When you know every day that you are writing her name in the lineup, it is a good feeling. She also led the team in batting average and had high numbers all over.”
Landmesser led Cherokee in almost every offensive category and continued the production in a 9-0 win over Milton in Columbus with two home runs and a double. She also recorded a hit and drove in a run for the Lady Warriors as the Lady Warriors were eliminated by Mill Creek.
Now going into her senior year, Landmesser believes her success will be a nice boost for her confidence. Cherokee will look to sustain its level of success as it returns many of its key contributors from the 2021 season.
“This season will definitely give me a lot of confidence, and I have struggled with that,” Landmesser said. “My last two seasons were not the best, I would say. This year, really coming out on top will push me to be even better next season and strive for the same thing.”
Carlisle was impressed with Landmesser’s surge this season, especially on a team that has key contributors throughout the batting order. Landmesser’s 38 RBIs and 44 runs scored were among the county’s best numbers.
“It was so much fun with our amazing coaches and going to Columbus for the first time in many years,” Landmesser said. “It was so cool, and the support from the school was amazing. I really hope we can do it again next year.”
