Just when you thought the tech year was over, we leaked the Apple Watch Series 8 design. Then we went a step further and leaked the M2 MacBook Air CAD files. Today I want to tell you about new software details I’ve heard over the past few days. These will not be big leaks, but it’s the sum of the little things.
Apple Standalone AR/VR App
The first story for today is that Apple is going AR/VR. This is not news. However, I can tell you that according to people familiar with the matter, who wish to remain anonymous, Apple software engineers are apparently working on a specific AR/VR app that will be included in future Macs, iPhones, and iPads.
The development is still in the very early stages, so I can not give you any concrete information, but I have some tidbits to report.
From what I understand, this app will take advantage of future Apple products like the rumored headset and glasses. The app is expected to be unveiled at WWDC 2022, although its launch is heavily dependent on how the production of the hardware that will use it evolves, as it could be delayed.
I also expect that Apple will eventually work on an app exclusively for the Apple Car, which will be released to the public sometime in 2026 or 2027.
The last thing I can tell you about this app is that it will not be available for all devices that can update to the latest software version, there are some hardware limitations, and it will only be available for certain last-generation devices.
Music App Redesign and More
The second thing I want to address is the Music app. Since Apple announced its music service in June 2015, we have seen numerous new features to perfect it. However, it’s true that the app has been getting a bit boring over the past few years, and that’s exactly why Apple is planning a redesign.
There is a chance that we will get to see it at WWDC 2022, although it is still unclear at the time of writing this post. Stay tuned if we can confirm it.
I do not know much about this redesign, but apparently, Apple wants to allow users to “focus on their favorite artists even more.” I am not sure what that means, so draw your own conclusions.
Mail App Overhaul
The last thing I want to touch on is Mail. To put it simply, the Mail app needs a lot of improvements to be competitive with other apps like Gmail or even Outlook. From what I understand, Apple is working on it. Engineers are making it simpler, more intuitive, more compact, and faster.
Its development is going well so far, so I expect we will see this at the next WWDC. I have been eagerly awaiting this redesign since I first started using Mail. I still use it for the most part, but the way it’s designed, the way it works, and how slow it can be when sending a photo, let alone a video, has me thinking about other options. For example, I have already switched my corporate email accounts to Outlook.
