The winter transfer window is just around the corner. Bayern Munich is unlikely to make any major signings during January. However, numerous players in the current squad are likely to attract interest from top clubs due to their contract situation.

Niklas Sule is one of the two senior players that will be free to negotiate with interested clubs. The German defender currently has six months left on his contract in Bavaria. Due to his form and contract situation in Bavaria, Sule has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for the defending European Champions.

According to Guardian, Chelsea could once again reignite interest in Sule after making no move for him last summer. Sule was heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge at the start of the last summer transfer window, but the Blues decided to push for Sevilla’s Jules Kounde for most of the summer.

With Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen facing uncertainty at Chelsea due to their contract situation, the English club’s interest in Sule makes sense. The German defender has reportedly tried to engineer a move to England in the past, so an opportunity to play for Chelsea will be difficult to turn down.

However, Rekordmeister has ramped up efforts to extend Sule’s contract. The German club has finally opened talks with the defender with the idea of increasing his wages to €10 million/year. Sule is keeping all options open for now, but the club and Bavarian faithful is likely to get a clear picture about his future in the next couple of months.

Julian Nagelsmann has played a big role in Sule’s improved performances this season.  The German coach wants Sule to stay at the club, but the negotiations are likely to be complex since the player has a lot of leverage to get a better deal.

In the worst possible scenario, Sule ends up leaving Bavaria on a free transfer in the summer transfer window. The Bavarian club may replace with him another German defender as they have been heavily linked with Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger. The 28-year-old center-back also has six months left on his deal at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea and Bayern could end up swapping two senior defenders on a free transfer during the summer transfer window. The English side might be bigger winners of this deal since Sule is the younger defender and his peak years are ahead of him. The next few weeks will be interesting as Die Roten may make one last push to secure the future of Sule.
