House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries on Wednesday mocked Republicans for infighting and Twitter feuds, telling reporters that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has “no control” of his conference.
Jeffries, a New York Democrat, said there are “active discussions” about a plan to punish Colorado Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert over her anti-Muslim comments about Rep. Ilhan Omar.

House Democrats have already removed two GOP members from their committee assignments during the current Congress over comments or posts about Democratic colleagues as Democrats have become increasingly fearful about their own safety in the wake of a violent riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
“Republicans are having a complete and total meltdown,” Jeffries said at a press conference.
“Liar, clown, trash, grifter, nuts,” he continued in reference to a Twitter spat between Republicans in which Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green, one of the lawmakers already removed from her committee assignments, attacked Rep. Nancy Mace for condemning Boebert’s remarks. “What happened to the kinder, gentler Republican Party? It doesn’t exist.”
Jeffries took aim at McCarthy, saying “the so-called leader has no control over what’s happening.”
“Why isn’t the Republican conference going to act on this?” he asked. “What more does Kevin McCarthy need to see? I mean, what more does this guy really need to see? He’s got Marjorie Taylor Green completely out of control, Gosar out of control, Lauren Boebert out of control. Crossfire. He’s trying to mediate the dispute, can’t do anything, and we think this guy, this conference, are going to solve problems on behalf of the American people? They can’t.”
Asked by reporters if Democrats will move to strip Boebert of her committee assignments as they did with Greene and Rep. Paul Gosar, who was also censured, Jeffries said, “As it relates to consequences for Lauren Boebert, I think there are certainly active discussions underway to make sure Lauren Boebert is held accountable.”
In the controversial video, Boebert claims that while she rode a Capitol Hill elevator with Omar, a police officer appeared to be concerned that the Muslim lawmaker was a terrorist.
“Well, she doesn’t have a backpack, we should be fine,” Boebert claimed she replied in an apparent reference to suicide bombings.
Omar called the story “made up” and slammed Boebert for thinking “bigotry gets her clout.”
Boebert initially attempted to walk back her comments but later defended them after a tense call with Omar, in which the Minnesota Democrat pressed for a public apology that Boebert refused to give.

A second, similar video emerged Tuesday, fueling the controversy, as did a series of tweets from Republican lawmakers after Greene attacked Mace on the social media platform.
