Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts told the media his ankle is fine and he'll be "ready to go" on Sunday against the Jets.
Speaking Wednesday to the media, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni gave an update on quarterback Hurts’ injured ankle, sounding slightly less confident than Hurts, but still very optimistic the second-year QB is a go on Sunday.
“We are hopeful. We are feeling good,” Sirianni said. “He’s feeling better every day. We are excited we are going to have him at walkthrough today. So really hopeful.”
The Eagles are holding a walkthrough on Wednesday instead of a full practice, something they have started doing the last few weeks. The walkthrough means Hurts can take part in more than he might be able to otherwise, so it doesn’t give a great indication of where the starting quarterback’s health truly is.
Sirianni did say that there is a chance Gardner Minshew takes some reps this week with the starters, which would be a departure from how Sirianni normally hands practice reps at the quarterback position, and a sign the team thinks there is a chance Hurts doesn’t play.
Of course, the Eagles have no incentive to tell anyone what Hurts’ real status or chances of playing are. If the Jets have to prepare for Hurts, as opposed to knowing Minshew is playing, that is an advantage for the Eagles.
Hurts appeared to injure his ankle at the beginning of the fourth quarter when he was pressured in the pocket and sacked. Hurts came off the field limping following the play and didn’t run the ball the rest of the game, although he did show good mobility in the pocket.
Hurts is coming off of arguably his worst game of the season this past Sunday, throwing three interceptions, no touchdowns and finishing with a passer rating of 17.5 Despite the poor showing, however, he has shown signs of improvement over the last month, including playing perhaps his best games against the Denver Broncos and New Orleans Saints, both wins.
The Eagles desperately need a win this Sunday if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive. Their chances at the postseason took a hit with their loss to the Giants, but a win would move them to 6-7, and right back into serious contention for a Wild Card spot in the NFC.
