Lost in Space is back with a brand new season on Netflix, and unless you’ve been in cryosleep, you’ve waited two long years for the Robinson family to return to our galaxy. Now Season 3 is here and our favorite outer space castaways (and their extended crews) are back for one last action-packed season of adventure. Will the Robinson kids reunite with their parents? Will Judy reunite with her biological father? Will anyone make it to Alpha Centauri? And will Robot’s murderous bros ever just chill out?

Wait—do those plots sound familiar to you? It’s been two long years since we last watched this show. Remember? December 2019? The world before the pandemic? So much time has passed since the end of Season 2, you’re gonna need a recap and rundown of where we left off.

How did Lost in Space Season 2 end?

Lost in Space Season 2 was all about robots and engines. The big reveal came when Maureen and John Robinson learned that the colony ship Resolute was able to jump back and forth between Earth and Alpha Centauri because of an alien engine and an alien robot pilot codenamed Scarecrow. The reason Robot—that’s Will’s Robot—boarded the Resolute to begin with way back at the start of the series was to rescue Scarecrow.

It all makes sense now—and now the would-be colonists are all aware that these alien robots love rescuing their own, no matter where and no matter what. That’s what happened in the Season 1 finale when SAR (Second Alien Robot) attacked the Robinson family while trying to retrieve Robot. This happened again in the Season 2 finale when a whole bunch of murderous robots attacked the Resolute in an attempt to recover their lost robot engine.

In order to survive the attack of a ship full of robots, the colonists had to make a tough call. With only one alien engine and the Resolute under siege, there was no way for all the humans to crowd aboard one Jupiter ship and jump to Alpha Centauri. That’s why, led by Judy Robinson, all 97 of the colonists’ kids boarded a Jupiter with Robot and an engine.

They jumped to safety, thanks to a sacrifice made by Scarecrow and Dr. Smith (although you can never be too sure that Smith is dead). As for the adults, they all scrambled into various Jupiters and departed the ravaged Resolute. Now they’re separated from their kids and left stranded in space with no engine to get them to the colony.

Meanwhile the Jupiter with all the kids reemerged not at Alpha Centauri, but somewhere completely unexpected. It turns out that instead of following the beacon to the colony, Robot instead used the engine to follow another manmade signal—one coming from the spaceship Fortuna. The ship disappeared 20 years ago and was thought lost by everyone. The ship was also captained by Judy Robinson’s biological father, Grant Kelly. Could Judy’s father be alive? Is Dr. Smith alive? Is Scarecrow alive? And what about SAR? And will the colonists ever reunite with their kids? And will they all make it to Alpha Centauri? Those are the questions we’re asking going into the new season of Lost in Space.
