Former Michigan head coach Brady Hoke has been honored for leading San Diego State to its best record in program history.
The 63-year-old was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year on Wednesday after the 19th-ranked Aztecs finished 11-1 during the regular season. They will face Utah State in the conference championship game at 3 p.m. Saturday.
This is the second time Hoke has been named Coach of the Year at SDSU. He also received the honor during his first stint with the program, guiding the 2010 team to a 9-4 record.
Hoke was hired by Michigan the following season and went 31-20 over four seasons in Ann Arbor. The Ohio native began his second stint at SDSU last year, finishing with a 4-4 record.
This season, the Aztecs were picked to finish third in the conference’s West Division in a preseason media poll. SDSU led the conference in scoring defense, allowing 17.3 points per game. Its only blemish was a 30-20 loss to Fresno State on Oct. 30.
SDSU also went 4-0 in nonconference games, highlighted by wins over Pac-12 members Arizona and Utah in back-to-back weeks.
Hoke receives a $15,000 bonus for being Coach of the Year, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
