Luke Fickell got his chance at his dream job back in 2011. He was the head coach for the Ohio State football program. It ended up being a very tumultuous year that ended in the Buckeyes finishing with their worst record in a very long time, culminating in a bowl loss.

Since that failure of a season, Fickell’s stock has rebounded tremendously. He coached the Buckeyes’ defense for a few more years before moving onto Cincinnati. Since leaving for the Bearcats, he has pushed every right button to make that program great.

Now Fickell has Cinci on the cusp of making the College Football Playoff as a G5 program. His stock has never been higher. While Ohio State has to deal with them a little bit in recruiting, if Fickell were to go to Notre Dame, it would be a whole lot worse.

In fact, such a move would be a huge problem for the Buckeyes. Right now, Ohio State can get pretty much whatever recruits they want in the state of Ohio and around the Midwest. If Fickell were to move to a bigger program with better resources and richer tradition like Notre Dame, that becomes much harder.

Fickell has always been able to recruit in this part of the country. Given the cache of a bigger program, he could do even better. Based on what we saw against TTUN, Ohio State needs every possible advantage they can get when it comes to recruiting.

Ohio State football fans better brace themselves. If Fickell does go to Notre Dame, that could spell double-doom for them with him and Marcus Freeman both in South Bend. Fans better hope that Fickell decides to stay at Cincinnati for whatever reason.
