Corina Palmer: ‘A ray of sunshine’

This section includes announcements of important events in our lives–births, graduations, engagements, marriages, and deaths. If you want to share an event with your community, please send a photo and a written piece to [email protected].

On November 12, a houseless woman, 56-year-old Corina Palmer, was found deceased in her tent between Garberville and Redway. The Sheriff’s Department told us that her death was being investigated but at this time not believed to be criminal in nature. Patte Rae, a community activist, reached out to us with this obituary for Palmer saying, “I want the community to know she was a person that was well thought of.”

Corina Palmer

The camper who was found deceased in her tent was Corina Palmer. We, who do work with SHO [SoHum Housing Opportunities] wanted to honor her memory with the following words.

You were one of the first campers that I met and became friends with. Your input on being houseless was invaluable in the work that is being done now to create a safe camp / low cost housing in our community. Your stories of traveling the states by hitch hiking and your decision to settle in so hum were always full of adventure and saddness on what you endured being a woman in a vulnerable position. The Virgo that you were created a clean camp site that even the sheriffs who checked on camps were impressed. I am so happy we recently celebrated your birthday together. Be at peace, you did your part here.

Eternal Blessings, Patte Rae

Corina was a ray of sunshine in my life. Her smile truly was contagious. She was a very kind, thoughtful and a very generous person. I have been so blessed and encouraged by our relationship over the past year or so.She will be deeply missed by me, family, friends alike. PS I loved her.

This is a person whose story would be informative. Imagine a person who is camping in a tent for years, hitchhiking across country, yet retained a sense of order and responsibility such as given in the press release. She must have been special.
