Many Moapa Valley residents were blessed with the opportunity to receive all the food needed to prepare a Thanksgiving meal. On Monday morning, November 22, members of the Moapa Valley Rotary Club teamed up with volunteers from the Lake Mead Baptist Church in a food distribution event to hand out 150 Thanksgiving meals to needy residents.

The Pop-Up Pantry has been customary for the Moapa Valley Rotary over the past year. The club has been teaming up with the Culinary Academy of Las Vegas to distribute bulk food items to community members on a monthly basis.

This special Thanksgiving event was well received as many recipients expressed thanks for the meals and the cheery, holiday spirit that came with them.
“It went well,” said Shanna McPheters, Moapa Valley Rotary coordinator for the event. “It is great seeing people be so happy to receive these meals.”

Shanna and her husband Gary travelled to Las Vegas early on Monday morning to pick up the food from the Culinary Academy of Las Vegas (CALV). The meals were pre-prepped with Turkey, Mashed Potatoes, stuffing, and sweet yams, and gravy.

“We are so thankful for the Culinary Academy of Las Vegas,” said McPheters. “They always think of us out here and do such a good job in providing amazing food and well-prepped meals.”

Many locals who came thought this was the monthly food disbursement from the Pop-Up Pantry. But this one wasn’t quite the same, Shanna said.
“It wasn’t a Pop-Up, but a special holiday meal give-out,” she explained. “We have two upcoming Pop-Up Pantries next month for the Christmas holidays.”

The Moapa Valley Rotary Club will be handing out meals on December 6 and then again on December 20 for those who are needing food assistance. Both days will begin at 7:30 am until gone or 9:30 am whichever comes first. The events will both be held at the Lake Mead Baptist Church at 725 N Moapa Valley Blvd in Overton.

The Pop-Up Pantry has been a worldwide charitable trend due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has caused many to be left unemployed or without nutritional means.
“We are so thankful for Yesenia Trujillo, the Outreach Director at CALV, and the rest of the students and staff there,” said Shanna. “They mentioned another Holiday Meal give-out for the Pop-Up Pantry on the 20th of December so we are excited to be able to provide this special holiday treat again.”
